How to Enter New Line in Same Cell (Google Sheets)

When working in Google Sheets, you may sometimes need to add multiple lines of text within a single cell. For example, you might want to include an address, a to-do list, or detailed notes without spreading the text across multiple cells.

How to Insert Line Breaks in Cell

Instead of pressing Enter (which moves you to the cell below), use the shortcuts while typing inside a cell:

  • Windows/Linux: Alt + Enter

  • Mac: ⌘ Command + Enter

This will create a new line within the same cell, letting you format your text neatly in one single cell.

Bonus Tips

Even with line breaks, text can sometimes overflow into neighboring cells. To fix this, you can turn on text wrapping.

  1. Select the cell(s).
  2. Go to the top menu bar.
  3. Click Format > Wrapping > Wrap.

If your new lines still don’t appear fully, try resizing the row.
